As a mama living on Vancouver Island, I have always been drawn to what the earth already provides. These ten remedies have been my go-to for years — not because I am against modern medicine, but because I believe in reaching for the simplest thing first. Most of these you already have in your kitchen. All of them have been tried on my own family. And every single one of them works.
- Ginger and Honey Tea: A soothing blend to help combat a sore throat and ease digestive discomfort. Combine fresh ginger slices and honey in hot water for a calming drink. We make this at the first sign of a scratchy throat in our house — it works best when you catch it early.
- Turmeric Golden Milk: A comforting anti-inflammatory beverage made with turmeric, milk (or a dairy alternative), and a dash of black pepper for enhanced absorption and immune support. I add a pinch of cinnamon too — the kids think it tastes like a treat.
For Ear Aches and Minor Skin and Eye Irritations:
- Garlic and Olive Oil Ear Drops: Mix WARM not hot olive oil and crushed garlic for a few minutes, then strain. Use as natural drops to relieve mild earache or infection symptoms. This one saved us many a late night — warm it gently and it brings relief quickly.
(Always test sensitivity first!) - Oatmeal Baths for Skin Irritations: Grind oats into a powder and sprinkle them into a warm bath to soothe dry, irritated skin and provide relief for conditions like eczema. An oldy but a goody! Blend your oats fine enough that they dissolve fully in the water — the milkier the bath the better it works.
- Used Tea Bag for a Sty in the Eye: Place warm used black tea bag over closed eye for 20 mins up to a few times a day. It will reduce irritation and help the body get rid of the sty. The tannins in black tea do the work here — consistency is key, do it several times a day for best results.
- Chamomile Tea Compress for Pink Eye: Soak a chamomile tea bag in warm water and apply it as a compress over the eyes to soothe irritation. Use a separate tea bag for each eye and never share — chamomile is remarkably soothing for irritated eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these remedies safe for children? Most of these are gentle enough for children — however always check for allergies first and adjust quantities for smaller bodies. The salt gargle and eucalyptus steam are better suited for older children and adults. When in doubt consult your family doctor or naturopath.
Can I use these alongside prescribed medication? These remedies are complementary — not replacements for medical treatment. If your child or family member has been prescribed medication always follow your doctor’s guidance first. These work beautifully as gentle support alongside conventional care.
How quickly do natural remedies work? It depends on the remedy and the person. The ginger tea and salt gargle tend to bring relief quite quickly. The turmeric golden milk and aloe vera work more slowly and with consistent use. Natural remedies generally work best when used early and consistently.
What should I always have stocked at home? My non-negotiables are raw honey, fresh ginger, garlic, turmeric, sea salt, chamomile tea bags and a good aloe vera plant on the windowsill. With those seven things you can handle most minor family ailments naturally.
To Help the Common Cold Symptoms:
- Strong Salt Gargle for Sore Throat: Mix salt with warm water to gargle, reducing throat discomfort and fighting bacteria. Warning do not swallow large amounts of salt. I recommend doing small amounts at first because this can evoke the gag reflex. Do it for a full 30 seconds at the back of the throat — uncomfortable but genuinely effective.
- Eucalyptus Steam for Congestion: Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of hot water. Inhale the steam under a towel to relieve nasal congestion and clear sinuses. Keep the towel over your head to trap the steam and breathe slowly and deeply for at least five minutes.
Any Cuts, Bruises and Burns:
- Aloe Vera Gel from a Plant for Minor Cuts and Burns: Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to minor cuts and burns for its soothing and healing properties. Snap a leaf straight from the plant and apply the fresh gel directly — it is more potent than anything from a bottle.
- Red and Infrared Light for Bumps and Bruises: Apply directly over the affected area for a minimum of 15 minutes — this is the threshold where the light begins to penetrate deeply enough to reduce swelling and support healing. Unlike some remedies, more time here is genuinely better. We use ours on bumps, bruises, sore muscles and minor injuries and the difference is noticeable.

A Note on Natural Healing
These remedies have been passed down through generations for a reason — they work. Not because they are magic, but because they work with the body rather than against it. As within, so without. When we support the body gently and consistently, it knows how to find its way back to balance.
Keep your kitchen stocked, trust what nature provides, and reach for the simple thing first. Happy healing.
