We were both born and raised on Vancouver Island—surrounded by ocean air, old-growth trees, and the rhythm of coastal life. Over the years, we moved away… to the city, even out of the country for a time. But something about this island always called us home. Now we’re back, raising our kids here, with great schools, a slower pace, and that deep sense of connection to nature that only this place seems to offer.

Sure—the cost of living has changed since our childhood (where hasn’t?). But what hasn’t changed is the magic of living in a rainforest by the sea. In this post, I’ll share what island life really feels like today—from everyday simplicity to the kind of beauty you can’t unsee. If you’ve ever dreamed of calling Vancouver Island home, here’s a look from a family who’s made the circle… and came back for good.

What We Love About Life on the Island🌊

  • Nature is literally everywhere—whether you’re on the beach, under the trees, or hearing birdsong from your kitchen window.
  • There’s a slower pace here. People make eye contact, say good morning, and support local.
  • Schools are strong and community-minded. Our kids are thriving here, and that peace of mind means everything.
  • The seasons are mild, and we get more sunny winter days than you’d expect!
  • It’s a place where your weekends can actually feel like weekends.

Yes, the Cost of Living Has Grown… But So Has the Lifestyle🏡

It’s true—Vancouver Island isn’t as affordable as it was in the ’90s. But in our experience, the value of life here has also grown. What we pay for in cost, we get back tenfold in:

  • Less commuting
  • More space to breathe
  • Everyday access to natural beauty
  • A safer, more connected environment for our kids
  • Depending where you decide to land close to all your box store shopping needs

What Surprised Us Most When We Moved Back 🌿

  • How much the little towns have grown! Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum, and even Bowser feel more vibrant than ever.
  • The diversity of newcomers—families, young professionals, retirees, and creatives alike are drawn here.
  • The sheer amount of community activities, farmers markets, and small events we now enjoy as a family.

Thinking of Moving to Vancouver Island? Here’s What We’d Tell You💡

  • Get clear on your must-haves: Do you want acreage? Walkability? Ocean views? Great schools?
  • Work with someone local who knows the rhythm of each community (spoiler: my husband Robert is happy to help with that 😉)
  • Whether you’re eyeing the northern beaches or considering city life in Victoria or Sooke—we can help you get a feel for the full island, top to bottom.
  • Have a dream to build your own home? We have strong connections with experienced builders and trusted contractors, and we’d be happy to help you make that dream a reality.
  • If you’re looking to retire, there are beautiful communities with low or even no-maintenance yards, so you can spend more time enjoying the island—and less time mowing it.
  • Know that island life is less about hustle and more about flow. The quiet moments here matter.
